Joe Brown had a shop. He sold meat in his shop alone. One Thursday a
woman came into his shop at five to one. "I‘m sorry I’m late." she
said, "I need some more meat for my dinner tonight."
Joe had only one piece of meat in his shop. He took it out of the
fridge and said, "This is 6. 5 dollars."
"That piece is too small," the woman said. "Haven‘t you got anything
bigger?"
Joe went into the room behind his shop, put the piece of meat into
the fridge, took it out again and closed the door with lots of
noise. Then he brought the piece of meat to the woman and said,
"This piece of meat is bigger and more expensive. It’s 8.75 dollars."
"Good," the woman said with a smile. "Give me both of them please."

Mark Twain was an American writer. He liked to tell funny stories, and
he also liked to play jokes. One day, a friend of his lost his wallet
(钱包) and asked Twain to pay his railroad ticket for him.
Twain said, "I’m sorry, but it happens that I have very little money
with me. I don‘t have enough money to pay both your ticket and my
own."
The friend was very sad.
"However," said Twain, "You can get on the train with me and, when the
conductor(售票员) comes through the train to collect the tickets, you can
hide under my seat."
The friend agreed to this plan. Later, however, when the conductor
came through the train, Twain gave him two tickets. One is for himself
and the other is for his friend under the seat.
Then in a loud voice, so that everyone in the train could hear him
easily, Twain explained, "My friend is a very strange man. When he rides
on a train, he doesn’t like to sit on the sent. He likes to lie on
the floor under the seat."
Of course, everybody then looked at the poor man under the seat and
laughed at him loudly.

Jack went to a car showroom(陈列室). He was wearing a dirty jacket.
He examined an expensive car carefully and then turned to speak to

cash( 现金 ) .He explained that the cars were for himself and his friends
working on a fishing boat. "We have all earned(挣钱) a lot of money this
season," Jack said. And we want to buy cars".

Most people want to work, but it has become more difficult in today‘s
world to find work for everybody. The economics(经济) of the world need
to grow by 4% each year just to keep the old number of jobs for
people. Often this is not possible, and so more people are without work.
Some people have no jobs now because new machines can do the work of many
